ROBERT JAMES MCEWEN:
Military: The Company mustered into service at Wilmington, NC. This unit was dispatched to Fort Anderson which was located near Orton Plantation on the south side of the Cape Fear River. Shortly this Company was ordered to Camp Wyatt about two miles above Fort Fisher. Later it was ordered to be a part of the Fort Fisher garrison. Robert mustered in as a Sergeant and was promoted to 1st Sargeant 12-14-1863. On 1-15-1865, when Fort Fisher fell, Robert was at home on leave in Bladen Co. He reported back to duty at Fort Anderson and rejoined the other units that had escaped the fate of the Fort Fisher garrison. These artillery men were known as the "Red Infantry" due to the red piping on their uniforms. Robert's unit engaged the Federals just outside of Kinston and also in the battle of Bentonville. In his letters home he describes this fighting. Robert's unit fell back to Raleigh, Durham, and Greensboro. This ordeal came to an end 4-26-1865 when General Joseph E Johnston signed the instrument of surrender at the Bennett Place in Durham Co. This ended the War of Succession. On about 5-1-1865 Robert and his comrades, with ten days rations, were paroled home. They were dispersed on foot to Bladen Co. On 9-5-1865 Robert took the "Oath of Allegiance". After discharging his duty faithfully to his native state he was once again active in managing the family plantation in Abott's Township.
This plantation was very successful and sold farm products locally and as far away as Philadelphia, PA. Robert was very active in the Democratic party, his advice was sought by both the local, state and Congressional Candidates. He was appointed by the Board of Education to the school committee for Bladen Co District 61. The Board of County Commissioners appointed him to the Board of Road Supervision for Abbotts Township. The state of NC appointed him to be a member of the Bladen Co Pension Board for "Relief of Certain Confederate Soldiers and Widows". He was a member of Elizabethtown Fraternity Lodge, No 1806, Knights of Honor. Robert was appointed by the Bladen Co Election Board to be the Registrar of Abbotts Township. Following a family tradition Robert served as Justice of the Peace for a great number of years. He was often referred to as Colonel or "Squire" McEwen.
