Cindy's Genealogy Page

What began as idle curiousity has turned into an obsession, so says my husband.  One night while surfing the net with nothing in particular in mind I came across some genealogy pages.  As time went on I discovered one of my paternal great grandmothers listed on someone's genealogy page, then a few days later I found one of my maternal great grandmothers listed somewhere else.  So I began to ask questions of my parents and other relatives and decided to do this as a gift to my parents and all their parents before them.

This is a work in progress and will take possibly forever to complete.

My mother's maiden name is Buie and my maiden name is Thomas. While researching the surname Buie, I came across many questions and lots of confusion.  I saw references to a book called The Family Buie: Scotland to North America compiled by Dr. T.R. Buie and Scott Buie.  As luck would have it, I was able to locate this book.  Though a wealth of information, it also presented quite a few mysteries.   With Scott Buie's permission I will present the introductory chapters as well as the complier's discussions of  the family groups represented in their book, for the availability to other researchers who don't have access to this book.  It is my hope that others who are researching may be able to offer new insights and information to solve some of these mysteries.  Additional notes and updates will also be contained within in the text highlighted in red.  Please feel free to send corrections/verifications/updates to be added in these pages.
As with the Buies, incomplete records and destructive fires, I find equal difficulty with the other side of my family.  The Thomases, and in turn Fitts and Cumbies, have all at the time of the Civil War lived in or around Petersburg, VA.  Many records from this area were destroyed during the War.  Though each family can be traced forward from time of immigration to this area and back to just prior to the Civil War, the records to make the connection have been difficult to locate.  Anyone who finds an ancestor here, please fill free to contribute.
