The Buie Families of Scotland

Sources for genealogical research in Scotland are abundant.  Here are presented some of the records pertaining to the Buie families of Jura, Colonsay, and Islay.  Since a tremendous amount of time and effort is required to examine the parish records, the entries mentioning Buies are noted on the following pages.  The parish records of baptisms are listed in the order of child's name, date of baptism, father's name, mother's name, and place of residence if denoted.  Marriages are presented with husband's name and residence, wife's name and residence, and date.  Death records contain name of deceased, date of death, and parents.  These church records are followed by some personal accounts and correspondence.  An additional aid in Scottish genealogical research is census records which began in 1841 and are recorded every ten years thereafter.  The 1891 census is the last year avail-able for public research.  The census records are located at the New Register House in Edinburgh and microfilm copies may be obtained on loan at Mormon branch libraries from the Genealogical Society Library in Salt Lake City, Utah.  Other sources are the civil registrations of births, marriages, and deaths from 1855 to the present which are kept at the New Register House.  These vital records are indexed and readily available for consultation.  Some are on microfilm at Salt Lake City.
It should also be noted that many parish records have been previously extracted and are on file in the International Genealogical Index which is available in the Mormon branch libraries.  The Buies of Moray and Banff are present in the IGI and any researcher of these families should consult this valuable reference.  Another valuable source for researching ancestors in Scotland is Dean McLeod's Aids to Scottish Research, a syllabus printed in Salt Lake City.
With this wealth of information and records one could easily reconstruct the
Buie families of Jura, Islay, Colonsay, Moray, and Banff.  Perhaps the genealogy of the Scottish Buie families could be the subject of an entire book devoted to them.
The ancient baptism records of Jura provide possible insight to the early families of North Carolina, although there are several tantalizing gaps.  The searcher should refer to the discussion of the early Buie families of North Carolina and make his or her own comparisons.  In the baptism records, mothers are generally listed by their maiden names. On occasion, an infant died very young and the parents, attempting to carry on the paternal or maternal given names, assigned later children the identical name.  When reviewing these old records, one should be aware of the various spellings of names in English and Gaelic.  An excellent source for Scottish name derivations and various spellings is The Clans, Septs, and Regiments of the Scottish Highland by Adam and Innes.
The interested researcher of the Buie families of Jura and North Carolina will disappointingly find that the baptism records for the years 1726 to 1731 and 1734 to 1810 are missing and 1731 to 1734 are incomplete.  Unfortunately, these periods include many of the birthdates of the North Carolina Buies.  Even for the years when the parish baptism records are "complete", many children's names do not appear.  However, recently the Campbells have turned their Jura records over to the Register House in Edinburgh.  These papers are currently being inventoried and when available, might prove a valuable research source for the study of these early Jura families.

Jura

Baptism and marriage records were kept at intervals until all vital records were sent to Edinburgh starting in 1855.  The 1841 Jura census lists many families named Buie which include several children that do not appear in the baptism records. Therefore, any research of these families should include a careful search of all census reports.
