1. JAMES1 BUIE was born Abt. 1842 in NC, and died Bet. 1880 - 1900 in Darlington Co., SC. He married SARA S. KEA. She was born May 1861 in SC, and died Aft. 1900 in SC.

James parents at this time are unknown. In 1860 he was living with in household in Chesterfield, SC with Eliza Lellan, age 49, Sarah Shoemaker, age 30, and Rosana Shoemaker, age 1.
His family in SC with surname Buie claim that he was from the Raeford, NC area. Raeford is now in Hoke Co., NC (formed in 1911). The other possibility is Raiford Creek Buies of Cumberland County. The compliers believe he is associated to the Buies of Bladen Co., NC.
From the Pope family, a recording made by Lila Mae Jones Pope in 1991 at age 75, who knew James daughter, Lela Buie Pope, says that her (Lela's) grandfather died in a War, though not the Civil War.
This would support the evidence that James was orphaned already and living with another family in 1860.
The time period would suggest the Mexican War or Indian Wars. The Indian Wars were too soon for James's birth. The only Buie to die from NC in the Mexican War was Hugh Buie.
I believe James is the son of Hugh Buie listed in the pension application (Mexican War) of Deliah Baker Buie, filed in 1849, in Cumberland Co., NC. I have been unable to locate James, Josiah S., Deliah or her son Hugh Robert in the 1850 NC census. HUGH BUIE and PENSION APPLICATION INFORMATION

One other interesting note: 1800 NC census Balden Co., Robert Kea is listed near Archibald Buie (Hugh's father) and near several McPhatter families (surname of Hugh's grandmother).
